I started using the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence about a year ago but stopped for a while since I felt like it wasn't really doing anything for me. It also didn’t help that first treatment essences confused me a lot - like what exactly does it do?
From what I've gathered, FTEs contain highly concentrated fermented ingredients that help with skin regeneration thus providing a more intensive treatment. Aside from providing hydration, FTEs strengthen the skin, make the skin brighter, smoothen out fine lines and overall texture of the skin making it appear more supple, and help other products absorb better. Sounds wonderful but I was just not seeing the effects.⠀
⠀
The first FTE I’ve tried is from Secret Key. Given that I have never tried other FTEs, I found that it was just okay. I was more than eager to try a different brand and came Missha’s FTE and that was soooo much better than the Secret Key. I remember oooooh-ing the moment I applied Missha on my face because it was silkier and just glided smoothly which I didn't experience with the former. Since Missha is popularly known as a dupe of SK-II, I wanted to see for myself why the Japanese essence is such a cult product.⠀

When I first used the SK-II, I thought it wasn’t as moisturizing as the Missha FTE (Intensive Moist- new formula) which I appreciated because I did feel that the Missha was a little too moisturizing for my oily skin. Aside from that, I just couldn’t pinpoint any difference. So I was convinced that Missha is the better pick since it is a lot cheaper. Fast forward to last month, I picked up my dusty bottle of SK-II again and decided to just finish it and be done with it. That is when I started appreciating the much-loved Japanese essence. Upon application, my skin felt softer and looked brighter in an instant! No kidding! It was another oooooh moment for me! I also noticed that the toner I applied after absorbed better. It was really amazing for me because I didn't experience any of those effects with the Missha nor the Secret Key. The only thing I do not like about SK-II (aside from the high price tag) is the scent... It's "amoy kulob" in Filipino and it doesn’t have a direct English translation but you know that smell of an old cabinet with trapped moisture? That's what it smells like for me. It's quite strong but it does disappear after a while.
I actually just finished my SK-II and I am excited to bust open a new FTE. Overall, I like the SK-II FTE even though the scent is not the best. I love that it eventually worked out for me after taking a break from it. So, will I repurchase? Yes. Unless my next FTE will perform (and smell) better.
Are you an SK-II fan?
SK-II FTE’s star ingredient is Pitera - a bio-ingredient containing ove 50 micro-nutrients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids and organic acids to condition skin’s natural function.
